I did try that as well with no luck, do you know of any alternative to try and find the root cause of this issue?

I think it might be a bug in conda smithy. In any event, it is not a big deal to merge if appveyor is failing,

It is not urgent for me to merge this one. I am happy to leave this here for troubleshooting conda smithy if that's going to be helpful for others.

I don't think anyone is actively working on this issue :) You should open a new tracking issue in conda-smithy 😉
