Status

Betfair has been using TSP in production as the real-time source of monitoring data (8 billion data points daily) since August 2014. TSP is used to duplicate the metric data stream, feeding it to OpenTSDB for retrospective analysis, and to Riemann for real-time graphing and alerting. In addition, various monitoring experiments are being tried thanks to the ease with which any developer can obtain a private copy of the TSP feed.

The set of metrics that the TSP agent extracts is defined by plugins, which are regular programs -- typically short scripts -- that print metrics to standard output in a prescribed format. The format is identical to one used by the tcollector agent, which makes TSP compatible with large set of existing tcollector plugins.

TSP is considered stable and mostly feature-complete. Further development occurs externally. New data sources are integrated as plugins, which are standalone and independent programs. New data sinks are integrated as remote services that receive a copy of the metric feed.
