The setup.py file has been deprecated for a long time, and there should no longer be a need for a bare setup.py file for build and deploy tools. The Python Packaging Authority now supplies a build tool that takes its place.

Removing the file depends on #1437 being implemented first in order to preserve all the other packaging and asset build tools.

See this blog post for background info.

Tasks:

  • Also remove the zip_safe flag in setup.cfg, as it only applies to .egg installs.
