Windows is pretty supportive of forward slashes instead of backslashes just about everywhere. Native open handle commands happily except whatever mix of slashes you want. There is one key place this is not true, the native open/save dialog boxes. Here if you try to use a forward slash anywhere in the path it tells you the filename is not valid, it will not traverse directories using forward slashes either (normal open/save file will change directories if you put the directory name with a / in the end). You can use forward slashes in the directory box at the top just not the primary file path:

Given most applications use the stock open/save dialog boxes this would have a wide reaching effect. I doubt most applications would have any issue with forward slashes in paths meaning it likely could be avoided actually translating forward slashes into backslashes. One key exception would be if they do manual path splitting.
