Feature Request: Add “Upper Center” and More Positions to Custom Size & Position

Hi,

I’d like to request an improvement to the Custom Size & Position feature in Rectangle Pro. Currently, the Docking Position options don’t include “Upper Center,” which would be very useful for certain window arrangements. Additionally, it would be great to have more predefined positions similar to those available in other areas of the app.

While the Custom option exists, it can be a bit complex for users who are not familiar with exact positioning. Many of us would benefit from an easier way to set percentage-based positions, ensuring that our window layouts remain consistent across different screens—whether on a MacBook display or an external monitor—without pixel density differences affecting the setup.

Would it be possible to add “Upper Center” as a built-in Docking Position and perhaps expand the available options to cover more common use cases?

First, I want to apologize for the delay in responding, and I also want to clarify a small mistake in my initial request—I originally mentioned “Top Center,” but I actually meant “Upper Center”. Apologies for the confusion!

After giving it more thought, I realized that my request fits into a broader improvement that could make Custom Size & Position even more useful. Right now, the available Docking Positions feel a bit limited compared to the flexibility offered in other areas of the app.

One way to expand this functionality without overcomplicating things would be to bring in the Snap Areas positions that are already available elsewhere in Rectangle Pro. It would be great if the following Snap positions could also be included in Custom Size & Position:

• Snap Left, Snap Right, Snap Up, Snap Down
• Snap Top Left, Snap Top Right, Snap Bottom Left, Snap Bottom Right
• Upper Center (formerly referred to as “Top Center”)

Since these positions already exist in the app, adding them to Custom Size & Position would make customization more intuitive, eliminating the need to manually enter pixel values while keeping the experience consistent.

Additionally, percentage-based positioning could further improve adaptability by allowing windows to scale across different screens, reducing the need for manual adjustments when switching displays.

For example, instead of defining a window as:

“Width: 800px, Height: 600px, X: 100px, Y: 200px”

Users could configure:

“Width: 80%, Height: 50%, X: 10%, Y: 20%”

This approach would ensure that window layouts stay proportional across displays, making them adaptive rather than static. However, adding more predefined positions like the Snap Areas could reduce the need for percentage-based positioning for many users. Still, a solution to maintain proportionality across different screens would be valuable. Additionally, clearer documentation or a short guide on using these features would be really helpful.

Thanks for the response. At the moment, I think everything that you're looking for already exists except for a docking position of upper center.

Percentages can be entered as either fractions or values less than 1.

Leave dimensions empty to snap to docking positions without modifying dimensions.

In addition to adding upper center, do you have any recommendations on how you would have more easily figured this out from within the app? Maybe have the Dimensions info displayed by default? Or a tutorial or video?

You're absolutely right! I got mixed up with the Snap positions since I tend to use them more often—my apologies for the confusion. Given that they’re already implemented, the only addition that would really be needed is Upper Center to complete the available positioning options.

That said, I still find percentage-based positioning a bit tricky to work with. While using values less than 1 works well for setting window sizes, positioning windows this way feels more like trial and error. For example, logically, setting both X and Y to 0.5 should center a window, but that doesn’t always work as expected. It can take a lot of tweaking to get the right placement, which makes the process less intuitive. A clearer way to define proportional positioning—or even some additional guidance on how it currently works—would be really helpful.

One way to improve this could be by expanding the View Footprint tool to provide better visual feedback. For example, adding guidelines with metrics (similar to PowerPoint’s alignment guides) could help users precisely position their windows. Taking this a step further, a cursor-based positioning mode—like macOS’s screenshot tool—could allow users to move a window freely within the preview and click to confirm its position.

Of course, I understand this could add complexity, and these are just ideas! But I do think having more guidance in this area would be helpful, especially since this section is meant to offer customization.
