Right now with Cartesian category axes, the categories are mapped to 1, 2, 3 etc... is there a way to control this? I’d like a label to show up at, say, 10, and the next one at 30 and the next one at 35.
I can do this by playing with bar x and offset and tickvals and ticklabels but there's a lot of math involved...
Having this feature would basically allow for supporting #4019 and "cost abatement" charts pretty naturally.

Hi - we are trying to tidy up the stale issues and PRs in Plotly's public repositories so that we can focus on things that are still important to our community. Since this one has been sitting for several years, I'm going to close it; if it is still a concern, please add a comment letting us know what recent version of our software you've checked it with so that I can reopen it and add it to our backlog. Thanks for your help - @gvwilson
