Two recent shell papers:

PaSh: Light-touch Data-Parallel Shell Processing - an optimizer that transforms shell to shell
POSH: A Data-Aware Shell - works with proxy servers to move computation to data

Lessons:

There are multiple ways to optimize shell scripts
They both have use cases for "declarative" metadata / annotations
We probably want some sort of AST metaprogramming hook (as opposed to textual metaprogramming)
- or provide Oil as a library
