https://github.com/nextcloud/nextcloud-vue/blob/2dbbdbceef82fc6251482fa29d03ac54663a0ad9/src/components/NcAvatar/NcAvatar.vue#L665-L674 is possibly responsible for this.

As a comparison look at the avatars in Nextcloud's user management. They come from the server. The letter has a saturated color instead of the main background white.
