A poignant essay by Indian-born author Ved Mehta, who offers a personal memoir of his impoverished native land. His narrative tells the story of his father's first cousin Chachaji ("Uncle-dear") and other members of his family. Chachaji is a proud man forced to get by on hand-outs and menial jobs. Film won Dupont-Columbia Award for its glimpse into the history and traditions that influence Indians today. "For the last 30 years I have lived in the West...I have written almost a million words trying to explain the country of my childhood to myself and to others."
