step to reproduce
Ctrl+O, type any invalid path (like "c:\dir\f:\dir\file.txt"), atom freeze and no longer responses.

Thanks for the report! I don't have a Windows machine on hand and can't replicate this issue on OSX, so I don't really have much to go on in terms of fixing this myself, sorry. But I'm happy to help anyone else who can consistently replicate this and wants to provide tracebacks/work on a patch.
